Scar tissue is extremely common and yet deeply misunderstood. Most of us were taught to “break up” scar tissue and to treat only the visible scar. Through scientific study we have learned that the tendrils of scar tissue can reach quite a distance from the scar we see on the surface and the cells of the scar respond differently to touch than one may think. By not only changing how we think about force and scar tissue, but viewing the body as a whole and utilising the connections throughout the body we can achieve significantly better outcomes in shorter time frames.

In this session we will discuss how to assess and treat scar tissue effectively using an evidence based approach. While not all scars are problematic, a large enough percentage are and I believe this information is invaluable for working with many patients.

Learning Outcomes
  • Think big picture, see scars from a full body approach
  • Effectively assess and treat scar tissue from an evidence based approach
  • Communicate clearly and effectively regarding the benefits of scar treatment while being mindful of the sensitivity surrounding scars
  • Learn safety protocols for working with different types and stages of scar tissue.

About the Presenter

Bobbi-Jo Corbett became registered as an RMT in 2018. During her time in school, she realized a passion for scar tissue and fascia and has made it her mission to learn as much as she can about both. Within her first year of practice she took a position at Shouldice Hernia Hospital treating patients 1 to 2 days after surgery. Bobbi-Jo has worked with women after cesarean births in a perinatal clinic and has maintained a general practice as well where she treats clients with a wide variety of scars.

This passion for scars and fascia has led her to education, wishing to improve not only how RMTs treat scar tissue but also how the whole health care system interacts with scars. Bobbi-Jo’s dream is to see RMTs more effectively integrated into post surgical care plans and for referring practitioners to take a more preventative approach to post surgical care.
