In acknowledgement of Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, this class will begin with a short lecture on Parkinson’s disease, including the definition, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, treatment options, and critical thinking steps for massage therapists for clients who live with Parkinson’s disease.

Then the class will open up for participants to bring their own interesting and challenging cases for peer supervision and discussion.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to…

  • Identify and describe the definition, demographics, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms and common treatment options for Parkinson’s disease
  • Discern the variables that inform clinical decision-making for massage therapy for Parkinson’s disease, with special emphasis on cautions related to medications and side effects.

Research

A full bibliography will be provided with the attendee handout. This includes primary and secondary sources with a special emphasis on information that is relevant for massage therapists.

Target Audience

This class will be useful for RMTs of all levels of experience.

CMTO Competencies

  • Communicate effectively: this course will help attendees to have useful conversations with their clients about their health.
  • Function in a client-centered manner: This course emphasizes that each person’s experience is unique, and clinical decisions must be made on a case-by-case (and day-by-day) basis.
  • Practice in a manner consistent with current developments in the profession: This class will bring attendees up to date on current understandings of the conditions under discussion, and any research about massage in those contexts as well.
  • Use an evidence-informed approach in your work: This class will use the best available recent information, and will provide attendees with links to all available resources.
  • Interact effectively with other professionals: This class will help attendees identify key decision points for clinical practice, so that they can have productive consultations with other healthcare providers if that is necessary.
