Irrespective of etiology, scar tissue ‘constructs’ us back together when tissue integrity has been interrupted. When the wound healing/scar formation process goes well, the outcome can be described as a functional scar. However, when the process goes askew, problematic/pathophysiological scars can form.

Irrespective of etiology (e.g. surgery, burn or accidental injury) a common hallmark of pathophysiological scarring is excessive and/or anomalous collagen, defined as fibrosis.

Operating on the premise that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, this presentation will explore the relationship between lymphstasis and fibrosis and provide an overview of an evidence[1]informed, massage therapy approach for tempering/preventing lymphstasis and fibrogenesis. We will also touch on how to facilitate productive changes in mature problematic/pathophysiological scar tissue.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Enhance the clinicians understanding of the basics of the wound healing/scar formation process and the difference between functional and problematic scarring
• Enhance the clinicians understanding of the role of the lymphatic system in wound healing/scar formation and implications associated with stasis
• Enhance the clinicians understanding of how early-post injury massage therapy intervention can temper/prevent lymphstasis and fibrosis
• Enhance the clinicians understanding of how our work can facilitate meaningful changes in mature problematic scar presentations
• Improve application of evidence informed knowledge into clinical practice
• Improve critical thinking skills

About the Presenter:

Catherine Ryan RMT is a CCHPBC Reg. Massage Therapist and RMTBC member dedicated to patient[1]centered care, evidence informed practice and life-long learning. Over her 35+ year career, Cath has engaged in the profession in a variety of clinical, educational and leadership roles. An established continuing education instructor, she has presented at conferences internationally, in the areas of postsurgical massage therapy and scar tissue management and myofascial pain and dysfunction, which also constitute her clinical practice focus. A published author/writer - you can find her words in various industry magazines and in Traumatic Scar Tissue Management – Massage Therapy Principles, Practice and Protocols (Jessica Kingsley 2016) – 2nd Edition in progress, tentative publication date spring of 2028, Fascia, Function and Medical Applications, 2nd ED.
