Course objective:

To acquire the skills and knowledge to provide massage that is both safe and

effective for any person, with any type of cancer, at any stage of treatment and

beyond.

More than a niche, being oncology massage-aware is essential for working with the growing number of our clients impacted by cancer and its treatments.

Janet Penny, RMT has a private practice and is co-author of Oncology Massage: An integrative approach to cancer care. She teaches both Introduction to Oncology Massage and Oncology Massage: Advanced Skills.

Learning outcomes:

Using a format that is both engaging and focused on active learning, Janet addressed key elements of working with people impacted by cancer and the often complex, long-lasting side effects of treatment.

This class creates scenarios to prepare therapists for the real-world implications of working with this population.

You will leave the class with knowledge of:

1. Cancer treatments and side effects
2. How to adapt massage to ensure safe treatment
3. Contraindications and precautions
4. Intake for medically complex clients
5. Working with a compromised lymphatic system
6. Stages of healing and how this impacts treatment of scars and radiation-induced fibrosis
7. Providing whole person care

Prerequisites for attending

This class is designed for massage therapists with a range of clinical

experience and treatment styles. Students are welcome.
