CMTO Draft Practice Guidelines
While RMTs in Ontario are not yet able to return to practice, the CMTO released draft guidance yesterday that RMTs will follow when the restrictions are lifted.
This guidance has been prepared based on Ministry of Health (MOH) and Public Health Ontario (PHO) information and resources, in collaboration with other healthcare regulators, and in consultation with the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario.
The CMTO is sharing this guidance now, in advance of the restrictions being lifted, so RMTs have time to prepare. Please consider the guidance as draft because MOH and PHO requirements may change.
COVID-19 Pandemic – DRAFT Practice Guidance for Massage Therapists includes:
- Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols
- The use of surgical/procedure masks by RMTs
- Changing linens, blankets and pillows after each client
- Rigorous disinfecting of face cradles, stools, treatment table etc.
- Removing any items that cannot be cleaned and disinfected between clients (e.g. table warmers/pads, holster to hold topical products)

Checklist Before Returning to Practice
Based on the CMTO guidance, the RMTAO has created a checklist of things you can do to ensure you are prepared for an eventual return to practice.
This includes items to purchase, changes to your practice space and changes to your record keeping and scheduling procedures. By having these things prepared you will be well placed to follow all CMTO guidance once a return to practice is possible.
Part of a return to practice includes accessing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as well as cleaning and sanitation equipment. The RMTAO is working on sourcing additional suppliers to help our members access this necessary equipment
